The woman said the situation was “insane,” with dogs urinating and defecating “non stop,” but they apparently respected her bed and did not jump on it.
The deadly hurricane, now downgraded to a Category 3 storm, has caused widespread damage across the Caribbean country, especially in Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island.
Nassau was not hit as hard, but Phillips said the heavy rainfall flooded her home and she lost power as Dorian passed through.
“All services are down, all TVs are fried from the lightnings so no more cartoons for the sick dogs until we can purchase new ones,” she wrote Monday on Facebook.
Phillips could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
Her Sunday Facebook posted has gone viral, with more than 50,000 shares. The generous animal lover runs The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, a shelter for homeless and abandoned dogs that, coincidentally, marked its fourth anniversary on Sunday.
She said the “saddest” part of the hurricane is that she couldn’t rescue any dogs from neighboring islands.
“I pray for the other islands who have unimaginable damages and I don't see how any dogs or any living being could have survived outside. My heart goes out to them,” Phillips wrote Monday.
She also thanked those who donated crates, which she used for the sick and “terrified” dogs.
